The development of baby's behavior and emotions are not only influenced by interaction with the mother. Depressed fathers also perceived negative impact on child growth.
A recent study revealed that children who live with a father with mental health disorders are likely to have behavioral and emotional problems.
The study authors studied a national sample of 22 000 U.S. children over four years. The team led by Dr. Michael Weitzman of the NYU Langone Medical Center, found that 11 percent of children living with fathers living with depression have behavioral and emotional problems.
In children who have parents happy, the figure was only six per cent. While children living with a mother living with depression, the figure to 19 percent. The study also found that 25 percent of children have parents who are depressed.
In America, one in 10 adults is believed to be suffering from depression and took her to the family. Mental disorders in older people are believed to influence interactions with children and in turn contribute to the child's behavior.
On Good Morning America program, Dr. Weitzman said the research is the first of its kind. "I think the father is often not considered in terms of their influence within the family and children's lives," he explained as the Daily Mail published.
"This led us to identify the fathers who are depressed and looking for ways to give care for them," he added.
The study results are expected to make a parent to recover from depression. According to him, happiness can be felt parent their children. Conversely, the father-mother also can spread the feeling of happiness on their children when they are depressed.
Alan Kazdin, a professor of psychology and director of the Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic at Yale University stated, "One of the best things a parent can do is to maintain physical and mental health of children.
"Not only the mother, we encourage both parents who were depressed to have treatment. It will make a difference in the interaction with the child."
